Housed on the banks of the river Douro, beside the historical part of Porto, recognised by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site, the Transport and Communications Museum is housed in the historical New Customs House (Alfândega Nova), one of the city's most emblematic buildings. It is close to the Ribeira riverside district, the Palácio da Bolsa, the centenary Luís I and D. Maria bridges, among other monuments, make the Museum one of the city's must-see attractions.
Apart from permanent exhibitions, the museum also puts on temporary exhibitions and out outdoor exhibitions with activities for families, groups along with workshops.

The museum is a 15-minute walk from Porto São Bento station. There is also a bus line (No 500) from in front of the station that stops in front of the museum.
