The Lousado centre of the National Railway Museum, run by the National Railway Museum Foundation, and managed in partnership with Vila Nova de Famalicão town hall, is in Lousado railway station, where the Minho line joins the Guimarães line. It covers the entire area of the original 'Companhia dos Caminhos de Ferro de Guimarães' (1883/1927) workshops of about 1,400 m2.
The rolling stock, built between 1875 and 1965 comes from eight different companies and was bought from six countries and various builders.
The museum artefacts include four steam engines and the oldest narrow gauge locomotive in Portugal, which was built in England in 1874, which sits alongside a medical car, which pays homage to Egas Moniz, a railway doctor who won the Nobel prize for medicine in 1949.
