Évora, the museum city with five millennia of history.
Considered the most charming city of Alentejo. Located in the beautiful region of Alentejo, of golden lowlands, sprinkled with olive trees and cork oaks.
The historic centre is one of the richest in monuments of Portugal. In 1986, it was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, which considered Évora “the best example of a Portuguese Golden Age city after the destruction of Lisbon in the 1755 earthquake”.
According to records, Évora would have been the headquarters of the Roman General Sertório's troops. The Temple of Diana – of great prominence in the city – is built during the presence of the Romans in honour of the Emperor Augustus.
In the 16th century, Évora became one of the most important cultural and artistic centres of the kingdom. Favoured by the Portuguese kings, who would spend long stays there, as well as the noble families who settled there and built palaces, churches and temples. It attracted artists, poets, painters, sculptors and scholars and thinkers.
