The museum is housed in a 4.5 hectare area with 19 railway lines and holds artefacts going back over more than 150 years.
The exhibition scene, completely given over to railways is worth a visit in itself. The collection is composed of 36,000 items of all shapes an sizes housed in note-worthy buildings.
The journey starts way back in the times of steam engines and opens a window onto the future of railway transport. There are also genuine treasures such as the Royal Train or the Portuguese Presidential Train. An extraordinary collection of machines that rolled along the tracks of history and rarely seen items related with trains and railways are sure to leave visitors with a desire to return.
The National Railway Museum offers a varied programme that includes workshops, cinema and guided tours. It also has comfortable areas to relax, a large outdoor space, quadricycles for visitors to try, a seed tunnel and augmented reality experiences among others.
