Let's go to Guimarães I already have the route all planned.
I managed to get the class all excited and we have decided to spend a day at the cradle of the nation. Guimarães is one of the country's most important historical cities, ever since king Afonso Henriques, the very first king of Portugal, right down until today. They say that the streets and monuments breathe history and charm everyone who visits.
The historical centre has been elected a World Heritage Site and in 2012 it was the European capital of culture.
We begin our visit at Guimarães castle and then head on to the Alberto Sampaio Museum and the Paço dos Duques de Bragança.
We are going to have lunch in Praça de Santiago, the most emblematic square in the city. After lunch we are going to take the cable car (the high point of the visit) and go to the Monte da Pena park, they say it is very pretty and has a magnificent view as it is the highest point in the city.
On the way back it is a custom to buy some cakes called tortas e toucinho-do-céu de Guimarães, to give our parents and grandparents. Hum! I don't think I will be able to resist … it's almost certain I will eat them on the way home…
